I had to drive my blind daughter to an appointment the other day. While she was there, I sat out in the car with the grandkids. There was a fence in front of me, and, as usual, I tried to see that fence in an unusual way.

I think it was Thoreau who said something to the effect that good fences make good neighbors. I guess because they keep the neighbors out. But, it keeps you in as well.

Looking at a Fence

Sitting in the car,
Waiting,
Looking at a fence.

I can hardly tell it's there
Because
Of all the bushes
Planted along its length.

But...

It IS there,
And it stops me,
Even if I do not wish to go.

I think, that for many,
Much of life is...

Sitting,
Waiting,
Looking at a fence...

They cannot see.

Not knowing it is there,
Stopping them,
Even if they do not choose to go.
